What technology is used to start a social networking site?

A friend and I at school are planning to open a social networking site. We have the specifics charted out, and are on the lookout for people with computer skills to help us. We were wondering what computer equipment we might be needing initially. We have come up with a rough draft, listing 5 computers, 2 servers and database administrator software, but are unsure if these would suffice. We appreciate any help in this direction.

I was asked to gather a list of these sites for him, but the only thing I can think of is LinkedIn. I know there are ones like Facebook and MySpace, but I mean more professional-geared sites.
